What is the Great Book Swap?


The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, and raise much-needed funds for remote communities. Schools, workplaces, libraries, universities, book clubs and all kinds of organisations can host one. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a gold coin donation. 

This year we hope to engage 30,000 students across Australia to help us raise $300,000 to buy 30,000 new books for remote Indigenous communities.


How does the Great Book Swap work?

1. Register online

Choose a date, set your fundraising target and create an online event page. We suggest holding it on some of these dates:

  • Christmas appeal fundraiser 2018
  • NAIDOC Week: 7–14 July 2019
  • Children’s Book Week: 17–23 August 2019
  • Indigenous Literacy Day: 4 September 2019

2. Promote your event

Keep an eye out for your resource kit of posters in the mail and stick them around your local community early. Supporters can make a donation directly to your online page in the lead up to your event so share your page:

  • With your family and friends
  • On social media - use our hashtag #greatbookswap
  • With your local newspaper
  • In your school or workplace newsletter

3. Gather the books

Set up a collection area for your Great Book Swap. Check your resource kit for an information sheet, bookplates, stickers, brochures and posters. If you need any extra, you can download these through your online account.

4. Swap!

On the day, lay all the books out on a table with a donation tin. Then set a time for everyone to browse for a book they would like to take in exchange for a donation. You might like to allocate time following the swap for some quiet reading time with the new books.

5. Submit your funds

Please submit your funds within two weeks of your event via your online page. You can do so via credit card, EFT or cheque. It is important you donate via this page so we can send you a Certificate of Appreciation.
